Get ready for TIBCO Spotfire 10.10 with the new release of the Discngine Connector 5.4

A few days after the release of the new TIBCO Spotfire 10.10 LTS, we are glad to announce the availability of the Discngine Connector 5.4 for Spotfire and Pipeline Pilot. This new release is fully compatible with the newest versions of Spotfire (10.10) and Pipeline Pilot (2020)

What’s new in Connector 5.4: Client Automation API and Pipeline Pilot components improvements

The Discngine Connector Client Automation API has been designed to dynamically and programmatically control the Spotfire client engine by using either a JavaScript API or dedicated Pipeline Pilot components. With the release 5.4, we improve the ability to inject snippets of IronPython on-the-fly. This allows the developers to create Spotfire based applications were the document content is generated with the same level of accuracy that you would get using the client itself:

  • Sophisticated visualization settings

  • Inject and run a Data Function on the fly

  • Execute a complex data transformation (pivot, unpivot…) on the fly

In addition to that, all Spotfire visualization types now have a dedicated component with a Custom IronPython Script parameter to inject any custom setting.

What can you expect from upgrading 10.10?

10.10 is the new Long-Term Support release, most of you will probably consider upgrading soon. With 10.10 you will benefit from all the improvement brought since 10.4, you can find the full description here: https://community.tibco.com/wiki/whats-new-tibco-spotfire

Among all these new features here are my favorites:

Azure SQL Database supported as Spotfire Server DB (from 10.5)

Today everything has moved to the cloud. Using an Oracle server or MS SQL Server to support the Spotfire DB sounds really overkill. With a few clicks, you can almost instantly provision a cheap Azure SQL Database and use it to store Spotfire objects (Library, users, preferences…). With 10.10, PostgreSQL is also supported on Amazon, Azure and Google Cloud.

Support for Python data functions in Spotfire Analyst (from 10.7)

As the number of Python Developers and Data Scientists using Python grows fast the native Python data functions are a great addition. In combination with the Discngine Data Functions for Pipeline pilot, it creates a nice framework for Scientific Data Science. Note that Discngine will also present soon an integration between Spotfire and Flask (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flask_(web_framework) ) that will allow the Python user community to rapidly build advanced mashup applications with Spotfire.

Customizable toolbar (from 10.8)

This one was one of the most wanted features from 10.3 LTS users! Spotfire now has a quick access toolbar in which you can add your favorites component, including the ones from Discngine.

Add a new calculated column to the final data table, directly from the data canvas (from 10.9)

The new Pipeline Pilot Calculated Columns were added in the release 5.3 of the Connector. This new functionality will make them even more useful.

Spotfire Analyst Portable (from 10.3)

It has been there since 10.3 but I must confess I had not tried it before. The portable edition solves many issues for developers who needs to run multiple versions of Spotfire Analyst on the same computer

How to get the newest release

We moved the download section for the Connector installation package on the general documentation page https://connector.discngine.com/download-center.html . The legacy FTP server will not be updated anymore after this release.
