The Discngine Spotfire Connector for BIOVIA® Pipeline Pilot is a set of extensions for Spotfire and a component collection for Pipeline Pilot.
It allows No-Code integration between the two products to combine the power of visual analytics with advanced scientific data manipulation
Pipeline Pilot Data Functions and Calculated Columns
Easy-to-use integration mechanism for data exchange (bidirectional) between Spotfire and Pipeline Pilot
Client Automation (Formerly Discngine Web Panel)
Programmatically interact with the full Spotfire API in both Analyst and Web Player clients. Lets you create guides for end-users, expose advanced forms, and integrate third-party software.
Pipeline Pilot Automation Tasks
Additional tasks to extend Spotfire Automation services: Pipeline Pilot protocol execution, Dynamic IronPython, Visual creation… Automation Services can be triggered from any protocol
“With Discngine’s connector, we think that we can make a big step change in our organization’s ability to utilize our data by replacing our current reporting tools with Spotfire.”

Frequently Asked Questions
-
This connector creates bi-directional data exchange between TIBCO Spotfire® and BIOVIA Pipeline Pilot®, allowing the creation of workflow-based applications that combine advanced data access and manipulation with powerful interactive visualizations.
It combines the power of visual analytics with advanced scientific data handling.
-
The connector includes four main modules:
Pipeline Pilot Data Functions & Calculated Columns: For easy bi-directional data integration
Client Automation SDK: Allows developers to programmatically interact with Spotfire through JavaScript
S.W.A.P.P (Spotfire Web Application for Pipeline Pilot): A low-code framework to streamline protocol integration
Pipeline Pilot Automation Tasks: Generate Spotfire documents server-side from Pipeline Pilot protocols
-
Pipeline Pilot Data Functions require no programming skills.
They work in all Spotfire clients (Analyst, Web Player Consumer, Web Player Business Author, and Automation) and provide a standardized integration mechanism supported by Spotfire.
-
Common use cases include:
Retrieving data from Pipeline Pilot protocol execution without developing an interface
Sending multiple Spotfire records (entire data tables, marked rows, selected columns) to Pipeline Pilot for processing
Interacting with protocols based on events like form changes or marked records
Writing back to databases/filesystems
Delivering custom data tables to Web Player users
-
Calculated Columns extend Spotfire's native column calculation concept to use Pipeline Pilot protocols as calculation engines. For example, instead of using standard Spotfire functions, you can execute a Pipeline Pilot protocol directly within a column expression like: executeProtocol_String('Protocols/Expression Functions/Calculate', [Structure], 'ECFP_6').
-
S.W.A.P.P (Spotfire Web Application for Pipeline Pilot) is a low-code framework to streamline Pipeline Pilot protocol integration. It was co-developed with AstraZeneca.
Users declare the Pipeline Pilot protocol, map parameters to a web form (wizard), and define actions on Spotfire documents based on protocol output files. It's ideal for creating custom web applications without extensive coding.
-
The Client Automation SDK allows developers to programmatically interact with the Spotfire C# client API through JavaScript.
It runs in both Analyst and Web Player clients, leverages modern JavaScript libraries (Angular, React.js, D3.js, Vue.js), works with Pipeline Pilot and other web-capable technologies, and is used to build advanced mashup applications.
-
Automation Tasks are used to generate Spotfire documents server-side from the execution of Pipeline Pilot protocols.
The use case is creating Spotfire documents with dynamic content on a schedule or based on events, with the new documents prepared and stored in the Spotfire Library automatically.
-
The connector is compatible with Spotfire 7.11 LTS and 10.3 LTS, and Pipeline Pilot 2017 R2 through 2020.
(Note: These are the versions mentioned in the documentation; current versions may differ).
-
The connector uses developer annual licenses.
Developers need licenses to create protocols and applications using Connector components, but end-users can execute protocols and applications with no restriction.
